Led Zep fans 'used to disappointment'

Jones: Trying to make it up

John Paul Jones says fans of Led Zeppelin are getting used to being disappointed, as rumours continue to circulate about the band reuniting.

But his way of making up for it is providing new music from his supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures – and to that end they'll release their second album this year, less than 12 months after their self-titled debut.

Led Zep got together for one show at London's O2 Arena in 2007 to celebrate the life of Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The show was oversubscribed by a factor of 1000 with two million fans applying for just 20,000 available tickets.

In the aftermath Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Jones and original drummer John Bonham's son Jason started work on a reunion tour - but Plant soon dropped out, saying the idea had run out of control.

The remaining trio auditioned a number of replacement singers including Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge before the project collapsed.

Plant returned to work with country singer Alison Krauss, Page started concentrating on solo material and Jones formed Them Crooked Vultures with Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age.

Rumours continue to circulate, with the most recent concerning a Led Zep set at either Download or Glastonbury this year.

Jones tells Stuff.co.nz: "Led Zeppelin fans have been disappointed a long time. They're getting used to it.

"I think they're enjoying the Vultures. It doesn't sound like Led Zeppelin but it's got a similar sort of vibe. It's a groovy, exciting rock band.

"We'll do a second album this year, by the end of summer – something like that. We're all hard workers. In a way we need to this. And it's got to be good. We've got reputations to uphold more than anything else."

Them Crooked Vultures will appear at Download in June this year - surprisingly, the first time any of the band have played Donington.
