Jones: Led Zep reunion unlikely

Jones: Really happy
Jones: Really happy

You might have thought we’d heard the last of it after Led Zeppelin’s one-off reunion in 2007. Nevertheless, rumours are back to haunt us after singer Robert Plant said yesterday he had a slot for Glastonbury 2010 if he wanted it – only he didn’t know who he might play a set with.

But Them Crooked Vultures look to have put paid to them nasty rumours, because Led Zep bassist John Paul Jones says he’s “really happy” with his new supergroup, also starring Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age).

Jones reveals there were indeed plans to hit the road after he, Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page reunited in December 2007, with dead drummer John Bonham replaced by son Jason.

When Plant said he didn’t want to do it, the other three members began rehearsing with a view to touring under a new name – but couldn’t decide on a singer.

Jones tells the BBC: “Jimmy and I rehearsed a bit with Jason. We couldn’t agree on a singer and it fell by the wayside. This this came along – and to be honest, I’m really happy.”

He’s not thinking about raising those ghosts again – instead he’s focusing on the Vultures' upcoming debut album, headed up by first single New Fang, which was also the first track the band worked on.

Jones explains: “Dave said, ‘I’ve got these chords,’ so we thought, ‘Let’s have a bash at that.’ We worked it into the song you hear now.”

Having guested with the Foos in the past, Jones has a lot of praise for Grohl. “I immediately recognised this was drummer that was, A, really good, B, groovy, and C, listened. All those nice things bass players like in drummers.”

Them Crooked Vultures is released on November 17 and the band tour the UK in December:
10/12 Plymouth Pavilions
11/12 Portsmouth Guildhall
13/12 Blackpool Empress Ballroom
14/12 Birmingham Academy
15/12 Edinburgh Corn Exchange
17/12 Hammersmith Apollo
