Slayer: UK tour still on

Slayer say their UK tour is set to go ahead as planned later this month, even though frontman Tom Araya is still recovering from emergency medical attention which forced them to pull out of a Canada trek with Megadeth. They’ll hit Britain on November 18.

Meanwhile, guitarist Kerry King tells Spin he know why Slayer are still such a popular band: “Metal fans aren’t fickle like fans of other types of music. Metal is like a brotherhood. And it’s hard to compare us to other bands. The obvious thing is to compare us to the others in the thrash big four, but Anthrax has gone through so many singers it’s not the same band it was. Megadeth is its own thing. Metallica became a pop band and stopped being metal. There’s no one like us.” He also reveals the truth about his trademark spike wristband: “It’s heavy as shit – I can only have it on for certain songs because it makes the tendons in my arm seize up. But you gotta give the people what they want.”

Boston radio station WAAF has heard a sneak preview of Slash’s solo album and say the first single will feature Ozzy Osbourne, and “the lyrics are going to piss off Axl Rose and Black Sabbath.” The first Slash single, Sahara, will only be released in Japan but you can hear it via Rock This Way.

Phil Collen of Def Leppard is hand-painting 30 extremely limited-edition Jackson PC1 guitars. He says: “I’m doing it like Jackson Pollock, then add my name in Japanese.”

Iggy Pop says the re-activated Stooges are going to record a stack of songs from their past: “Guitarist James Williamson is hot to trot and there’s a lot of old stuff we failed to record. We wrote a load of songs we only ever played live. I’m looking forward to doing some studio recordings.”

The Metal Den observes that Swedish magazine Red Hot Rocks is celebrating the new Kiss album with four covers, each displaying a band member. But it’s not the current lineup – Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are featured instead of current guitarist Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer. Wonder why?
