Top 500: The story behind the story

AC/DC: Most songs in the list
AC/DC: Most songs in the list

As reported on Rock Radio and across the web, you came, you spoke and Metallica conquered, when thousands of listeners submitted their top 10 tracks of all time for our Top 500 Weekend.

But with time to look through the full results, we can reveal that while Metallica scored top track with Enter Sandman, and had 14 tracks in the full list, they were fourth most popular band overall.

AC/DC led the pack with 17 tracks in our listings, followed by Led Zeppelin with 16 and Queen with 15. And Rock Radio’s top 20 most popular bands list consists entirely of acts who’ve been on the scene for over 20 years.

Rock Radio Online Editor Martin Kielty comments: “People weren’t asked to choose their favourite bands but their favourite songs. But it’s still interesting to look at things this way round.

“When you do, you see we’re talking about bands who are mostly known for two things: a great back catalogue and great live shows. That means people relate these bands to good memories in their lives, which is one of the things that can make even an average rock band into a classic one.

“Bands who have built up a catalogue of classics over the years will always score high when the rock nation speaks. But people aren’t blind to moments of magic like Radar Love, I Believe in a Thing Called Love, Hocus Pocus and even Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds.

“I’d like to know how, why and when people listen to their favourite tracks as well – but would you rather be filling in questionnaires or enjoying the music? Thought so.”

Tie Your Mother Down should have been much higher, and Def Leppard deserved more I think. How Green Day have 7 in there i'm not quite sure..
