Mustaine: Takeover
Mustaine: Takeover

Dave Mustaine of Megadeth took over Rock Radio on September 19. Here are the tracks he played – and what he had to say about some of them.

Listen to Paul Anthony’s interview with Dave

Guns n'Roses: Used To Love Her

Danzig: Mother

We’d just got done playing with Germany and we were heading over to do Rock Am Ring. Glen was there and I got to meet him – I went into his dressing room and I said, ‘Hey Glen, it’s Dave!’ and he went, ‘Ngh.’ And I went, ‘Hey, nice to meet you too – listen, I’m going to take off,’ and he went, ‘Ngh’. Then he went out onto the stage and proceeded to throw the monitors down into the pit area by the security. That was pretty interesting…

Lamb of God: Beating on Death’s Door

Alice in Chains: Rooster

They played on Clash of the Titans with myself, Slayer and Anthrax and this was right before they broke. There was virtually no one in the audience when they got ready but by the time they hit the stage people would fill in, then all of a sudden that song Wood… That was their breakthrough song and it was really exciting to see them go from relatively unknown to massive. I’m really proud of their efforts to get back together. Best of luck to Jerry and you guys – love ya.

Motley Crue: Too Fast for Love
Guys in bands hooking up with their own dancers is never a great idea. I’m not saying anyone in Motley Crue had hooked up with their dancers – I’m saying Scott Ian from Anthrax had hooked up with one of the Motley Crue dancers. And this beautiful girl, her dad is Meat Loaf. Can you believe that?

Skid Row: I Remember You
Does anybody remember watching that fiasco on MTV? I do!

Opeth: To Bid you Farewell
Very very very very peculiar guy, Michael – we were on Gigantour in the States and he’d lean into the mic and sing songs right on top of it. We were in New Jersey – you’ll have to bleep this – and he said, ‘This song is about ------‘. I thought I’d just die. I’ve heard stuff before on tours which shocked me, like when we took out Korn when no one knew who they were, and Jonathan was in his kilt, which was interesting enough, but then he said ‘I’m a faggot!’ I was like, oh no – I was mortified…

Faith No More: Take This Bottle

Black Sabbath: Evil Woman

How can anyone say anything bad about these guys? The only bad thing I can say is I wasn’t there right at the beginning to experience it from the start. I love this band. We just did a tour with Heaven and Hell and it was really fun. I love Ronnie – he’s a consummate professional. That guy can belt it out. I remember years ago when So Far was starting to do good and I said, ‘Hey Ronnie, thanks for taking us out on tour,’ and he said, ‘No, thank you, you’ve got a great record,’ and I was like, ‘No, thank you…’ And he said, ‘Look, we can stand here jerking each other off or we can go and smoke a joint – what do you want to do?’ I like this guy! So he jerked me off – no, we went and got loaded.
