Heavy Metal For the 2011 Census

Are you a defender of the faith? Do you throw the horns more often than you put your hands together? Then you’ll want to get in on Metal Hammer’s Metal Britannia campaign to let the powers that be know it.
“Rock’n’roll is my religion and my law…” (You Can’t Kill Rock & Roll, Ozzy Osbourne, 1981)
Rock Radio's 'Dark Lord' Alex Milas said “It’s been 40 years since Black Sabbath defined the sound we came to know as heavy metal. More than a sound, it’s a state of mind and a way of life for people from Mumbai to Tokyo to Sao Paolo. Why not celebrate this multi-tentacled beast? Hell, if the Jedi can do it, then we can to!"
In the census of 2001, over 390,000 people stated that their religion was ‘Jedi’ on their census forms, making the fictional Stars Wars creed the fourth-biggest religion in the UK. With your help, we want to give metal the recognition it deserves by getting it acknowledged as a religion in the UK!
Over the next year, Metal Hammer, with the help of Saxon’s Biff Byford acting as our very own world metal peace ambassador, will be working tirelessly to ensure that Heavy Metal is recognised as a way of life every bit as significant and worthwhile as any traditional religion.
“People live and breathe heavy metal,” he states. “As a band, we’re fanatical and passionate about the music and the fans are the same. Metal is bigger now than ever before. Somebody might be suffering in this economic climate, but it’s not heavy metal bands! Ha ha! This is a great time to be a fan of metal and we should celebrate that.”
