Five Finger Death Punch were forced to cut their main stage set short after an explosion of crowdsurfing instigated by frontman Ivan led to a stage invasion.

The singer, who was already facing a massive circle pit in front of him, called on the crowd to start surfing, promising that the high-quality security teams would make sure everyone was kept safe.

But the call backfired when so many people surfed into the pit it became overcrowded – and some fans took the opportunity to climb onto the stage.

The show was stopped when event managers and additional security rushed on to deal with the influx.

Friend of Rock Radio DJ Muppet says: "It was absolutely f**king insane. Ivan started trying to calm people down once the music had stopped, calling for them to get off stage and leave the pit.

"After a couple of minutes it was all over and everyone had climbed over the fence back into the crowd area.

"But I can't believe it – it's one of the most intense things I've ever seen."

5FDP were able to do one more song, The Bleeding, which they delayed until they were sure energy levels had dropped to something more controllable.

Muppet says: "They've just made so many new fans. Everyone was on their feet. It was as insane as Biohazard back in the day."

Biohazard were kicked off stage, then off festival premises, in 1994 after encouraging a stage invasion.
